Marcus Lundberg (b. 1995, Alingsås) is a Swedish composer and pianist active in the field of contemporary music. He is currently based in Gothenburg and Arvika.
Lundberg's work is concerned with qualities of impermanence and fragility. He mainly writes for acoustic instruments, exploring fragmentary structures and subtleties of sound through sparse, quiet soundscapes. His compositions often linger in the liminal spaces between silence and sound, slowly and gradually shaping a space for attentive listening.
His music has been performed at festivals such as Vindöga, Avtryck and Kalvfestivalen by ensembles and soloists such as Musica Vitae, ensemble neo, Curious Chamber Players, 40f, Anna Svensdotter, Ellen Ugelvik, Anders Jonhäll, ensemble hybrid and Gothenburg Wind Orchestra.
His education includes a bachelor’s and master’s degree in composition at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg, with such teachers as Malin Bång, Esaias Järnegard and Ole Lützow-Holm, as well as various studies at Ingesund School of Music. Further studies include private lessons with composers such as Klaus Lang, Chaya Czernowin and Pierluigi Billone.
Lundberg is the recipient of several art grants from such institutions as the Swedish Arts Grants Committee, Helge Ax:son Johnson Foundation, Adlerbertska Foundations, the Swedish Royal Academy of Music, the Swedish Society of Composers and the Swedish Performing Rights Society, and in 2023 he was appointed Scenkonst Sörmland’s ’Young Swedish Composer’. He is a member of FST and ISCM, and his scores are published by Svensk Musik. In addition to his activities as a composer Lundberg is a board member of Levande Musik, organizer of contemporary music concerts in Gothenburg.
